The pink love hearts hidden inside is my kind of romantic way to a dinner date. Coupled with my favorite cuppa and music, dim the lights, and let the dream begin.

Or simply have it with a girlfriend over a cozy afternoon tea. If the weather is great in our spring garden, then we can sit in our garden and enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful green. I don’t even need the love heart to make my day, the simple and elegant vanilla cupcakes themselves will make me a happy girl.

Another great love heart surprise cupcake, don’t you think? I totally love surprise cakes, check out my chocolate cherry surprise cake here. So today, I am having the opposite surprise cake here on Cupcakepedia. This time it is a white cupcake with the same red love heart. You can change the love heart into other shapes if you use a different shaped cookie cutter. But hey, love heart is the best shape for me, and I will stick with it for now. Want to give your loved one that super romantic surprise? Then you can try these surprise cupcakes. It takes some extra steps to make, but the end result is so satisfying that I will keep on making them.

Instead of using a chocolate cake recipe or chocolate mix pack, simply use a classic vanilla cake recipe (search on Cupcakepedia will give you many results) for this white surprise cupcake. Follow the instructions here. But make them in cupcakes, instead of loaf pans.

Enjoy and have a great day. See you soon and I will have new exciting cupcakes here.

  • Chocolate Pound Cake recipe or mix (for 1 loaf of cake)
  • 1/6 teaspoon Pink Food Coloring (use Wilton Rose or similar colourings)
  • ½ teaspoon – 3/4 tablespoon Natural Cherry Extract

Special equipment:

  • Love Heart shaped Cookie Cutter (3 ½ inches wide 3 inches tall)
  • Loaf pan

Preheat oven per the instruction on the cake mix package.

  • For the vanilla pound cake, add 1/8 teaspoon Wilton Rose coloring to the mix. Then add cherry flavours. Mix well and bake per instruction on the package.
  • Remove from oven. Allow to cool completely.
  • Reheat oven per instruction for the chocolate pound cake recipe or mix.
  • Place cherry pound cake on a cutting board. Cut the cake into slices as thick as the cookie cutter.
  • Then proceed and use the cookie cutter to cut one love heart out of each slice. Set aside.
  • Butter a loaf pan and place cherry cake hearts in the middle of the pan; point down, back-to-back and touch each other.
  • Prepare the chocolate pound cake recipe or mix according to the directions.
  • Fill the chocolate mixture into the loaf pan where the cherry cake hearts are sitting. Fill in the batter on both sides, in between the hearts (this way each heart will have some chocolate cake between them and cover the top of the hearts as well. This step can be a bit messy so get someone to help if you can.

Bake the chocolate cake per instruction for your recipe or cake mix package.

Remove the cake from oven and allow to cool on a cooling rack.

Top up with your favorite whip cream or buttercream, and add chocolate love heart as a special treat, plus bright red cherries on top. (optional)

What a fest for Valentine, Mother’s Day or any other romantic occasions!

Finally, it’s time to slice up and you will give your loved one a total surprise. It’ll be a total joy to see the look on their faces when the love hearts reveal themselves.

Want to make these gluten free? It’s easy, make sure you use gluten free cake mixes.
